It’s been quite a year at the newest HSCDSB school. Since opening in September there has been lots of excitement surrounding St. Basil Catholic Elementary in Sault Ste. Marie. On Monday there was more reason to celebrate as Grade 5 student Keira Berlingieri became ‘Mayor for a Day’.
Keira was the winner of a contest sponsored by the City of Sault Ste. Marie and the Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie North.
In a media release, Mayor Christian Provenzano said, “I was really impressed by the record amount of submissions this year. What I really enjoyed about Keira’s video submission was that she recognized the importance of a familial component to our community. Keira’s maturity and personality shone through in her video and I look forward to working with her and to visiting her class.”
The contest drew well over 100 applications from schools across the city. Four other students from HSCDSB schools received honourable mentions for creative submissions. They were Mary Plastino, Grade Five, St. Mary’s French Immersion, Ashley Morgenstern, Grade Five, St. Paul, Elliana Brohart, Grade Five, Holy Cross and Lacey Levesque, Grade Six, St. Basil.
Keira was taken on a tour of the Mayor’s office and the rest of the Civic Centre and also had the opportunity to open the main meeting of City Council’s regular Monday meeting. She also got to choose a charity of her choice for a $500 donation. Keira elected to support the Algoma Family Services Foundation. Also, Keira’s class at St. Basil will receive a pizza party and a visit from the Mayor.
