St. Joseph’s Manor in Elliot Lake and Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School collaborated during the 2017/18 school year to incorporate inter-generational socialization and literacy programming at St. Joseph’s Manor. Students chose the books for their session from the school library and attended the Manor to present them.
Students took the initiative to approach and introduce themselves to the resident and read their story. Each student would typically read their story approximately three times to different residents during each visit to the Manor.
The students and residents had the opportunity to discuss the stories together sharing, comparing perspectives, and the promotion of comprehension and the love of books. The residents had the opportunity to interact with youth which has been determined to reestablish and enhance social appropriateness as well as reduce social isolation in the elderly population.
This was a successful initiative for both Our Lady of Fatima School and St. Joseph’s Manor and we look forward to conducting a similar program during the 2018/19 school year.
