Based out of St. Mary’s College and St. Basil Catholic Elementary School, the HSCDSB Hockey Canada Skills Academy is designed to develop skills, build character, and enhance students’ academic achievement by establishing a balance of both academic and athletics within the school system.
Currently, the Academy is offered to students in Grades 7 and 8 at St. Basil and Grade 9 at St. Mary’s. Depending on interests, enrollment, and rink availability the program may become available to more grades in the coming years.
The school board, in partnership with Hockey Canada, has developed the academy to ensure all students, no matter their skill level or experience can enrol in the program. The instructors are committed to the development of each individual athlete by providing a personalized and directed strategy for improving their hockey skills.
With all the necessary resources to help develop the athletes, the Academy focuses on three main areas:
- On-ice skill development for 120-180 minutes a week.
- Off-ice sessions in:
- Strength and Conditioning
- Food and Nutrition
- Video analysis
- Learning different hockey systems
- Mental training, designed to teach students self-discipline, self-motivation, self-confidence and goal settings.
Sponsorship opportunities are available for those students requiring financial assistance, as there are additional fees for participation in the program.
