POSITION: Indigenous Graduation Coach (Temporary, Non-Union)

LOCATION: St. Mary’s College, Sault Ste. Marie, ON

EFFECTIVE DATE: Start September 2021, end date undetermined

The Indigenous Graduation Coach will provide intensive supports to Indigenous learners with the goal of obtaining an Ontario Secondary School Diploma and successfully transitioning into post-secondary education, training or labour market opportunities.  The successful candidate will build positive relationships with Indigenous students by identifying barriers and solutions to student learning, engagement and well-being.  In addition, the candidate will collaborate with school staff, parents, Indigenous community partners and outside agencies to build networks and supports to foster success for students during and outside of the school day.  The candidate will play a lead role in assisting all staff members to improve achievement, well-being and graduation rates for Indigenous students attending St. Mary’s College and Holy Angels Learning Centre. 

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications, skills, experiences, and attributes:

  • Degree or diploma in Social Sciences, Indigenous Studies/Services, First Nations Family Support/Community Worker, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, working with and supporting youth;
  • Knowledge of Indigenous traditional teachings, cultures, perspectives, values, and history, and a deep connection to the local Indigenous community;
  • Awareness of local Indigenous community resources and ability to connect students and families to these resources;
  • Ability to be a mentor and an advisor to Indigenous students;
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, proficient computer skills and a willingness to be flexible;
  • Valid driver’s license and the willingness and ability to travel for school board related business is required;
  • Ability to submit a satisfactory Level 3 Vulnerable Sector Police Records Check prior to the commencement of employment duties.
