Students from elementary schools across Sault Ste. Marie partnered with St. Mary’s College in hopes of making Christmas a little brighter for local elderly residents.

As part of the Heaven Cent Campaign, elementary school students created hundreds of Christmas cards which will be distributed by SMC students to the elderly in seniors’ residences and care facilities across the city.

“I am very proud of the enthusiasm shown by our students to help out this worthwhile initiative. The St. Mary’s College Heaven Cent Campaign is a tradition that allows our secondary students to live out Catholic values and demonstrate their commitment to social justice. Including our elementary schools in this campaign through our Student Senate is a natural extension,” said Director of Education, Rose Burton Spohn.

“This is such a great example of our students following the teachings of Jesus. I am sure this gesture will make an impact during these uncertain times. I congratulate everyone involved,” said Board Chair, Sandra Turco.

The Heaven Cent Campaign is comprised of three calls to action: Adoption, Action and Alms. The Christmas card initiative is one aspect of the campaign. Annually, through various student activities, thousands of dollars are raised during Advent.

Funds will be distributed in January to local organizations chosen by the students.
