{"id":11948,"date":"2022-01-26T08:32:10","date_gmt":"2022-01-26T13:32:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/polite-rate.flywheelsites.com\/hscdsbtest\/?post_type=news&#038;p=11948"},"modified":"2022-01-26T08:33:21","modified_gmt":"2022-01-26T13:33:21","slug":"lets-talk-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.hscdsb.on.ca\/hscdsbtest\/news\/lets-talk-mental-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Let&#8217;s Talk Mental Health"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"11948\" class=\"elementor elementor-11948\" data-elementor-post-type=\"news\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-7fc770b elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"7fc770b\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-58d481e\" data-id=\"58d481e\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0c0f44e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0c0f44e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>At the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board, the mental health and well-being of our students is of utmost importance.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>Our school board offers focused and effective mental health supports that are available to all students. \u00a0Our team of registered counsellors work with students in our schools every day to ensure they receive the support they need.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>Our board also offers innovative supports to help support student mental health. \u00a0Licenses have been purchased to allow our students in intermediate and senior grades free access to a comprehensive mental health app to use at their convenience. \u00a0Tools like this can be used with or without counselling support. \u00a0The app helps any student who wishes to strengthen their mental health, whether they have identified challenges or not.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>One of the most important elements of our board\u2019s support of the mental health of our students is the welcoming, caring and faith-filled environment within each of our school communities. \u00a0Each day, staff across our board work to foster supportive relationships with their students. \u00a0As we know, just one caring adult can drastically improve a student\u2019s experience at school and trajectory for future success.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>If a student in your home would benefit from mental health services in their school, please connect with your principal, or call 705-945-5675.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board would like to wish all the families in the Algoma region wellness and safety at this time.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\"><b>MANAGING ANXIETY <\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>The last three school years have been heavily impacted by COVID-19, lockdowns, and restrictions. \u00a0This will have increased feelings of isolation for many. \u00a0Social isolation and loneliness can contribute to increased anxiety and many of us have felt these effects in different ways. \u00a0We would like to take this time to offer some helpful tips for managing anxiety.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>These tips and others like them are available in our board\u2019s monthly mental health newsletter Focusing on Mental Health, available on our website. \u00a0To access the newsletter <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/site13659.gowizhost.com\/hscdsbtest\/departments\/special-education-department\/\">click here<\/a><\/strong><\/em>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>Square breathing<\/b>: one of the best foundations for all self-regulation, breathing can act like a remote for our body. By using effective breathing, we can slow our heart rate and calm our bodies and minds. \u00a0Breathe in for a count of 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4, repeat.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>Journaling<\/b>: writing about our worries can be very helpful in better assessing and addressing them. \u00a0Having our worries written out helps give our mind permission to let go of them. \u00a0A notebook near the bed can help.<\/p><p><b>Progressive Muscle Relaxation<\/b>: PMR involves the tightening and release of our muscles. \u00a0This practice can calm our bodies and helps relieve tension and stress. \u00a0With many scripts and resources online it can be an effective way to reduce anxiety.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>Catholic Meditation<\/b>: Through mindful practices, we call our attention to the here and now. \u00a0The opposite of anxious thinking, where we often worry about the future and dwell on the past. \u00a0Taking mindful time for prayer and religious reflection can help to settle our racing thoughts and provide peace.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>Reverse \u201cWhat Ifs\u201d<\/b>: anxiety exists to alert us to a problem. \u00a0It doesn\u2019t fix anything, it only tells us something could be wrong. \u00a0It\u2019s job is to jump to the absolute worst case scenario, like a fire alarm. \u00a0Try turning the tables, talking back to the anxiety by reminding yourself of the possible ways the situation worrying you could go well.<\/p><p>Remember, we all have anxiety, and feeling nervous is a normal and healthy reaction to many situations.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board, the mental health and well-being of our students is of utmost importance.\u00a0 Our school board offers focused and effective mental health supports that are available to all students. \u00a0Our team of registered counsellors work with students in our schools every day to ensure they receive the support they [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":11949,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":[],"class_list":["post-11948","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
