{"id":13037,"date":"2022-03-08T08:46:37","date_gmt":"2022-03-08T13:46:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/polite-rate.flywheelsites.com\/hscdsbtest\/?post_type=news&#038;p=13037"},"modified":"2022-03-08T08:50:40","modified_gmt":"2022-03-08T13:50:40","slug":"students-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.hscdsb.on.ca\/hscdsbtest\/news\/students-mental-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Students &#038; Mental Health"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"13037\" class=\"elementor elementor-13037\" data-elementor-post-type=\"news\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-e0a4075 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"e0a4075\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-a2e0c37\" data-id=\"a2e0c37\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4f6d341 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4f6d341\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Issues in mental health do not take the weekend off, and the students of St. Mary\u2019s College (SMC) have responded accordingly.\u00a0<\/p><p>This past Saturday, as part of a virtual conference hosted by School Mental Health Ontario, five St. Mary\u2019s Knights met with 30 other students from across the province to discuss important issues related to teenage mental health.\u00a0 The initiative came together through SMC\u2019s IMPACT Team, a group that helps to inspire and promote the positive culture for which St. Mary\u2019s College has been known over the past 65 years.<\/p><p>\u201cIt was really important for us to participate in this week\u2019s provincial conference,\u201d said Grade 10 student Elizabeth Gavey, a member of IMPACT who also participates on SMC\u2019s volleyball and badminton teams. \u201cWe learned a lot about mental health and the signs to look for when teens are struggling with depression or anxiety.\u201d<\/p><p>Sydney Withers, also in Grade 10 and on the school\u2019s IMPACT team, wholeheartedly agreed. \u201cIt was a chance for us to collaborate with others not just from our own school but from across all of Ontario and even some from the United States.\u201d Withers also commented on the conference\u2019s timeliness\u2014occurring during a global pandemic which, for many, has brought mental health issues to the forefront.<\/p><p>St. Mary\u2019s students were actively engaged throughout the conference in various small-group workshops that not only highlighted key issues in mental health awareness, but the leadership that students can demonstrate during difficult times.<\/p><p>\u201cThe workshop I attended was about maintaining your own mental health while also supporting the mental health of others,\u201d said Grade 12 student Adam Morgenstern, whose numerous roles at SMC include Student Trustee for the HSCDSB, Co-Chair of Student Senate, and Media Design Coordinator for the Ontario Student Trustees\u2019 Association. \u201cNow more than ever, during the pandemic, it\u2019s important to recognize what is \u2018more than a bad day.\u2019 This workshop gave us extra tools to have in our back pocket when navigating through friendships and relationships with our peers.\u201d<\/p><p>As part of the weekend\u2019s events, students were treated to powerful keynote addresses from Pen Moodz, a Canadian poet who has garnered international attention for \u2018speaking truth to power,\u2019 as well as from Indigenous Youth Advocate, Theland Kicknosway.<\/p><p>\u201cThe event featured a lot of various cultures,\u201d commented Ava Barone, a Grade 9 student who is enjoying her first year on the school\u2019s IMPACT team.\u00a0 \u201cWe also got equipped with places to go, websites to visit, and hotlines to call.\u00a0 There are many resources that are available for us to promote.\u201d<\/p><p>Grade 12 student, Andrew Chilelli, agreed that the conference was a meaningful learning tool to help the Knights continue to inspire positive leadership and change in the school community.<\/p><p>\u201cIt\u2019s something that\u2019s lacking in a lot of areas for young people across the province,\u201d said Chilelli, a member of SMC\u2019s football and badminton teams, math team and Link Crew.\u00a0 \u201cAt the conference, we learned about what\u2019s called the Metre Approach. If you see a change in someone for two weeks\u2014that is the metre stick\u2014then it might be time to get in contact with them or to encourage them to get in contact with someone else.\u00a0 Tools like these help us to create such a supportive environment at St. Mary\u2019s College.\u201d<\/p><p>It is nothing new for St. Mary\u2019s staff members to witness their students hard at work on leadership initiatives, especially during after-school hours.<\/p><p>\u201cI had the honour of watching our students in action this weekend at the conference,\u201d smiled Mario Rocchetta, a teacher moderator for SMC IMPACT.\u00a0 \u201cThey did a tremendous job representing themselves, our school, and our Catholic faith on the provincial stage.\u201d<\/p><p>St. Mary\u2019s College Vice-Principal, Tiziana Palumbo, echoed Rocchetta\u2019s sentiments.<\/p><p>\u201cWe are incredibly proud of our Knights who embraced the opportunity to participate in this conference this weekend,\u201d shared Palumbo.\u00a0 \u201cSchool Mental Health Ontario\u2019s initiative enables us to actualize the board\u2019s strategic direction of ensuring a safe learning community where students are cherished, listened to and included.
