Religious and Family Life Education is a key means by which our Catholic learning community is able to develop the full potential of each child and to nurture a personal relationship with Jesus.<\/p>

Each class becomes a community of faith. Each community studies the faith and traditions of the Church. Through these studies we all become more deeply rooted in Jesus Christ. \u201cAt one time Jesus said, \u201clet the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs\u201d (Mark 10:14). Images of God they are, each one \u2013 treasures of God\u2019s kingdom. In God\u2019s Image<\/em> nurtures four- and five-year-olds as they discover who they are in the manifold traces of God\u2019s presence in and around them.<\/p>

The metaphor \u201ca trace of God\u201d is used throughout In God\u2019s\u00a0Image<\/em>, linking the resource to the activities, growth and very\u00a0being of the young child. \u201cTrace of God\u201d aptly describes the god-like quality of four- and five-year-olds, who are in the process of\u00a0creating a space for themselves in this world. The energetic play\u00a0of the child, the original drawings and forms, the endless\u00a0curiosity and zest for exploration, the exuberant sense of\u00a0wonderment \u2013 all these are traces of God. They are intimations\u00a0or hints of God, a God who leaves a mark.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cWe Belong to God<\/em> seeks to go to the very heart of our faith: our belief in God. The program is the first sketch in a landscape that seeks to be drawn over and over again with new tones of colour, new details, and new figures for the rest of the children\u2019s lives. We hardly know how to draw this landscape, this world of God and us. In these times it seems all the more difficult.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>

To catch a glimpse of this God, it is not enough to listen to\u00a0the stirrings of our own heart or be enraptured by wonderment\u00a0before the beauty of the immense pattern of life and energy\u00a0around us. Even though it is a good place to begin, it is not\u00a0enough. What we feel and hear within and what enraptures us\u00a0with wonderment seeks a word to say it and an action to live it.\u00a0But who speaks this word and who is its witness? Christians know\u00a0that God has spoken through Jesus Christ, the Word who truly\u00a0became flesh and lived among us as witness to the one who sent\u00a0him. It is through Jesus that we come to see the fullness of\u00a0God\u2019s glory. The Bible, God\u2019s written word, is testimony to this.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cJesus is not here, he is risen!\u201d On that Sunday when the message of Easter was heard for the first time, two disciples of Jesus were on their way to Emmaus. Cleopas and his companion had heard the message from the women who visited the tomb, but they could not accept this astonishing news. Their day and their journey were engulfed by sadness. Jesus, the one they had hoped for as the way to God, had died gruesomely on the cross. In despair, they were leaving Jerusalem, their hearts full of snuffed \u2013out memories of things that had been happening there the last few days. For them, the dream had ended. They were returning home to Emmaus, probably preparing to pick up the pieces of their lives. They were hardly expecting what was to happen to them that Sunday! Cleopas and his companion encountered the risen Jesus!<\/p>

Without them knowing what was taking place, the risen Jesus met them on their way. They thought they knew Jesus. After all, they had walked with him from his baptism in the Jordan to the cross in Jerusalem. But, in fact, he was still a stranger to them. Slowly, as they made their way to Emmaus, he revealed himself in word. At the end of the day, when he broke bread in their presence, they saw him. In We Belong to the Lord Jesus<\/em>, we will accompany Cleopas and his companion on their journey of discovery. Following their route, the children who enter into this Eucharistic catechesis will have an opportunity to experience Jesus in new ways.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>

In Year 3, In the Spirit we belong<\/em>, the overall aim is to deepen the experience of belonging to God through the community of the followers of Jesus gathered in the Spirit.<\/p>

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (#687)<\/em> describes beautifully how the Spirit brings us into relationship with God through Jesus Christ…<\/p>

The Catechism speaks also of the experience of the Spirit within the Church… It recalls the many real ways the Spirit is present to the community of the faithful: in the Scriptures; in tradition; in the magisterium (the Church\u2019s teaching); in the liturgy, in which the Holy Spirit puts us into communion with Christ; in prayer; in the gifts and ministries by which the Church is built up; in apostolic and missionary life; and in the witness of saints through whom the Spirit manifests holiness, and continues the work of salvation. (see Catechism of the Catholic Church,\u00a0#688)<\/em><\/p>

Come and See<\/em> looks at the Creed\u2019s meaning for nine- and ten-year-olds, hoping to deepen their understanding of and\u00a0attachment to the person of Jesus Christ. Why? Simply put, it\u00a0is because those who come to know and believe in the Lord Jesus\u00a0Christ will experience in him life in its fullness. (see John 20.31)<\/p>

Year 4, Come and See<\/em>, opens up the Scriptures to the students by placing the gospels in their hands. The students are becoming older and more capable of taking some ownership of their faith life. Their reading skills now enable them to meet the Lord by taking up their own copy of the Bible and discovering in it the very Word of God.<\/p>

The content of the Year 5 program, May We Be One<\/em>, is the\u00a0Church as the assembly of God\u2019s people and as the sacrament of\u00a0God\u2019s action among us. May We Be One<\/em> is rooted in article 9 of\u00a0the Apostles\u2019 Creed: \u201cI believe in the holy catholic Church\u201d as\u00a0developed in the Catechism of the Catholic Church<\/em> (#748-962)\u00a0The Catechism presents the Church as a people called by God,\u00a0made into the Body of Christ and sealed and sent by the Holy\u00a0Spirit to be a sacrament in the world. You Shall Be My Witnesses<\/em> invites the students to enter into this world of God that Jesus laid open for us. Each of the ten units shows how to each revelation of God in the Bible there corresponds a certain human behaviour, a certain way of human acting. In other words, there is a close link between the revelation of God and the revelation of who we are. In what we do<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>

to one another, the way in which we live with and for the other, in the way we care for the earth, we are living out our relationship with God. That is the reason why each of the units of You Shall Be My Witnesses presents an image of God as revealed by Jesus Christ.<\/p>
