WHAT IS ACE?

The Academic and Communty Education Program (ACE) is intended for those students who have been identified with either a Developmental Disability, Mild intellectual Disability, or an alternate identification which includes low cognitive functioning as part of the student profile. It is not intended for students formally identified with behavioural challenges.

The goal of the ACE program is to help/support each student to reach his/her potential.  Each student in ACE is on an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) established collaboratively with school staff, parents/guardians and Special Education resource personnel. Goals are determined for each student and it is around those goals that the student’s program is designed.

Transportation to and from St. Basil Catholic Elementary School is provided; this is arranged by
the Transportation Department. Students have door to door service. Dismissal from the
program is earlier than regular school hours.

ABOUT THE ACE PROGRAM

The ACE program focuses on life skills and functional academics with a math and literacy
emphasis.

Life Skills:
Students have the opportunity to participate in and be exposed to a variety of life skills. Each student is supported to develop at his/her own pace in order to be successful. Activities that are part of the program include: activity based learning, grocery shopping, cooking, taking public transit, taking part in community service.

Academics:
Students have the opportunity to continue to develop functional math and literacy skills.  Students work on their individualized programs with support provided as necessary. (Activities
include, but are not limited to: money, time, reading, phonics, spelling.)

About the Students:
● Students are identified and placed by the Identification, Placement and Review
Committee (IPRC)
● Students are placed in ACE when regular classroom programming is not adequately
meeting their needs.
● Typically, students in the ACE program are achieving well below the expected level for
their age.
● Some ACE students have experienced difficulty socially in their regular classrooms and
may be less mature than other students their age.
● Typically, students in the ACE program are experiential learners; programming is
designed around this strength.
● Because of the lower adult to student ratio, additional support is available to assist in
meeting behavioural, personal, physical and /or emotional needs.
● Students in ACE would be encouraged to participate in mainstream opportunities in
areas of strength and interest.

AFTER ACE…..SECONDARY SCHOOL PLACEMENT AT ST. MARY’S COLLEGE

Placement at St. Mary’s College is dependent on  each student’s academic abilities, social skills and adaptive functioning.  Decisions are made in collaboration with parents and academic staff.

Possible placements include:

● Independent Living Skills (ILS)
● Locally developed courses at a secondary school and GLE support.

St. Basil provides a French Immersion program that is being expanded on a yearly basis.  Currently the program includes students from Kindergarten to Grade 6.  The program will continue to expand by one grade each year until Grade 8.

The French Immersion program will be delivered on a 50/50 model similar to the board’s other French Immersion schools.

The Hockey Canada Skills Academy is open to students from Grade 5 to Grade 8. 

In partnership with Hockey Canada, we have developed and designed a Hockey Skills Academy which is aimed at ensuring that all student-athletes, regardless of skill level or experience may enroll in this outstanding opportunity. 

This program is designed to enhance a student-athlete’s confidence, individual playing skills, self-esteem and opportunities in both academics and athletics.

St. Basil’s Leader in Me program featured on ONNTV:   Part 1      Part 2   

Native as a Second Language (Ojibwe) will be offered to students from Kindergarten to Grade 8.  Students will learn how to speak, read and write Ojibwe through a variety of resources including, online resources, DVDs, songs, prayers and stories.

A key component of the program is learning about the culture, the history and traditions of the First Peoples of Canada.  Indigenous education is open to anyone who wants to learn more about the First People of Canada.
