Students at St. Basil learned a lot about civics in October when they prepared for the student vote.
They were paid visits by the candidates for mayor and learned about how wards are set up and that people get to vote for two councillors in their ward. They also learned about the election for Catholic trustees.
The student vote saw candidate Donna Hilsinger get the most votes and Matthew Shoemaker (elected by the public to the mayor’s office) finish 3rd.
Students ‘elected’ seven of the ten councillors that were voted in to office. For the trustees vote the student votes agreed with 5 of the 6 trustees voted into office.
