St. Basil Catholic Elementary School offers a full English program from Kindergarten to Grade 8 plus other unique programs as noted below.\u00a0 The school features state-of-the-art facilities that will enhance student achievement.\u00a0\u00a0As a Catholic nurturing community, we are called and committed to the full potential of each child and to foster a personal relationship with Jesus that will inspire Catholic leadership.\u00a0 Your child will be part of a safe and faith-filled school that is dedicated to developing the whole child.<\/p>

All of our students, from Kindergarten to Grade 8, will be able to utilize special rooms including a science lab, music room, lecture\/drama room and dance studio.\u00a0 The school also has a chapel and cultural room.<\/p>

Families in need of day care services will have the opportunity to choose St. Basil\u2019s on-site day care services.\u00a0 There will also be a Before-and-After school program that will be offered to students up to the age of 12.\u00a0 For further information contact Child Care Algoma at 705-945-8898.<\/p>

WHAT IS ACE?<\/strong><\/p>

The Academic and Communty Education Program (ACE) is intended for those students who have been identified with either a Developmental Disability, Mild intellectual Disability, or an alternate identification which includes low cognitive functioning as part of the student profile. It is not intended for students formally identified with behavioural challenges.<\/p>

The goal of the ACE program is to help\/support each student to reach his\/her potential.\u00a0 Each student in ACE is on an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) established collaboratively with school staff, parents\/guardians and Special Education resource personnel. Goals are determined for each student and it is around those goals that the student\u2019s program is designed.<\/p>

Transportation to and from St. Basil Catholic Elementary School is provided; this is arranged by
the Transportation Department. Students have door to door service. Dismissal from the
program is earlier than regular school hours.<\/p>

ABOUT THE ACE PROGRAM<\/strong><\/p>

The ACE program focuses on life skills and functional academics with a math and literacy
emphasis.<\/p>

Life Skills:<\/strong><\/em>
Students have the opportunity to participate in and be exposed to a variety of life skills. Each student is supported to develop at his\/her own pace in order to be successful. Activities that are part of the program include: activity based learning, grocery shopping, cooking, taking public transit, taking part in community service.<\/p>

Academics:<\/strong><\/em>
Students have the opportunity to continue to develop functional math and literacy skills.\u00a0 Students work on their individualized programs with support provided as necessary. (Activities
include, but are not limited to: money, time, reading, phonics, spelling.)<\/p>

About the Students:<\/strong><\/em>
\u25cf Students are identified and placed by the Identification, Placement and Review
Committee (IPRC)
\u25cf Students are placed in ACE when regular classroom programming is not adequately
meeting their needs.
\u25cf Typically, students in the ACE program are achieving well below the expected level for
their age.
\u25cf Some ACE students have experienced difficulty socially in their regular classrooms and
may be less mature than other students their age.
\u25cf Typically, students in the ACE program are experiential learners; programming is
designed around this strength.
\u25cf Because of the lower adult to student ratio, additional support is available to assist in
meeting behavioural, personal, physical and \/or emotional needs.
\u25cf Students in ACE would be encouraged to participate in mainstream opportunities in
areas of strength and interest.<\/p>

AFTER ACE\u2026..SECONDARY SCHOOL PLACEMENT AT ST. MARY\u2019S COLLEGE<\/strong><\/p>

Placement at St. Mary\u2019s College is dependent on\u00a0 each student\u2019s academic abilities, social skills and adaptive functioning.\u00a0 Decisions are made in collaboration with parents and academic staff.<\/p>

\u25cf Locally developed courses at a secondary school and GLE support.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFrench Immersion<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t

St. Basil provides a French Immersion program that is being expanded on a yearly basis.\u00a0 Currently the program includes students from Kindergarten to Grade 6.\u00a0 The program will continue to expand by one grade each year until Grade 8.<\/p>

The French Immersion program will be delivered on a 50\/50 model similar to the board’s other French Immersion schools.<\/p>

The Hockey Canada Skills Academy is open to students from Grade 5 to Grade 8.\u00a0<\/p>

In partnership with Hockey Canada, we have developed and designed a Hockey Skills Academy which is aimed at ensuring that all student-athletes, regardless of skill level or experience may enroll in this outstanding opportunity.\u00a0<\/p>

This program is designed to enhance a student-athlete\u2019s confidence, individual playing skills, self-esteem and opportunities in both academics and athletics.<\/p>

Native as a Second Language (Ojibwe) will be offered to students from Kindergarten to Grade 8.\u00a0 Students will learn how to speak, read and write Ojibwe through a variety of resources including, online resources, DVDs, songs, prayers and stories.<\/p>

A key component of the program is learning about the culture, the history and traditions of the First Peoples of Canada.\u00a0 Indigenous education is open to anyone who wants to learn more about the First People of Canada.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
