Is your child curious, adventurous, and eager to learn beyond the classroom?

Our Outdoor Education Program offers students at Holy Cross and Our Lady of Lourdes (Elliot Lake) a unique opportunity to explore, discover, and grow through hands-on learning in nature.

About the Program

The Outdoor Education Program blends classroom learning with meaningful, real-world experiences in the outdoors. Students will learn both inside the classroom and through direct, hands-on experiences on the land at St. Kateri Outdoor Learning Centre.

Through activities like hiking, navigation, environmental studies, and seasonal outdoor experiences, students build strong connections to their learning while developing confidence, independence, and teamwork skills.

Programming is aligned with the Ontario Curriculum and supports cross-curricular learning in subjects like science, geography, and physical education.

Why Outdoor Education?

Outdoor learning provides students with opportunities to:

  • Build teamwork and problem-solving skills
  • Develop resilience and confidence
  • Strengthen their connection to the land
  • Engage in hands-on, experiential learning
  • Support their physical and mental well-being
  • Explore different ways of learning beyond the traditional classroom

This program is especially beneficial for students who thrive in active, engaging environments.

Registration Information

NOTE: All students are able to register for Outdoor Education at St.Kateri, however transportation within the Outdoor Education Program is to/from Holy Cross Catholic School. If you are from Out of Zone (ex: St. Basil) – the expectation is that the family arranges transportation to/from Holy Cross to be able to participate in the Outdoor Education Program.

Spaces may be limited. Register early to secure your child’s spot.

The program is available to students attending Holy Cross and Our Lady of Lourdes (Elliot Lake). Students from other schools in Sault Ste Marie are also able to attend, but need to arrange their own transportation.

The Outdoor Education Program is designed for students in Grades 5, 6 and 7. Please check with your school for specific eligibility.

The program supports academic success by:

  • Connecting classroom learning to real-world experiences
  • Engaging different learning styles through hands-on activities
  • Building skills in teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking

If you have questions, please contact your child’s school directly or reach out to the board office for more details.
