The HSCDSB is committed to following the Ministry of Education vision and goals for the implementation of French language learning.

Elementary Programming

French immersion

French Immersion Programs are offered in a 50-50 model to students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 at selected schools.  Students receive 150 minutes of French instruction daily.

Dual-Track French Immersion

Dual-Track schools house a French Immersion program alongside a regular English program.  Students in the French Immersion stream learn in the 50-50 model from Kindergarten to Grade 8.  They interact with all members of the school community for school functions, athletics, liturgies and celebrations.

NOTE: The St. Basil French Immersion program is currently offered to students from Kindergarten to Grade 6.  The program will expand to include Grade 7 students as of September 2024.

Secondary Program - st. mary's college

The French Immersion courses offered in the HSCDSB will enhance students knowledge of the French language and culture and fulfill all the requirements of the Ministry of Education.  Students who successfully complete 10 courses in French Immersion subjects will receive a French Immersion Certificate at graduation.

Diplôme d'études en langue française

The DELF junior and DELF scolaire are diplomas issued by the French Ministry of National Education in recognition of French-language studies. These diplomas are recognized around the world.

About the DELF  |  DELF FAQ

core french

Core French is mandatory from Grades 4 to 8 for all students.  However the HSCDSB offers Core French from Grades 1 to 8.  Grades 4 to 8 receive 200 minutes of instruction per week.  Grades 1 to 3 receive 150 minutes instruction per week.

Students who successfully complete Grade 9 to 12 Core French courses will receive at graduation a French Certificate of Completion.
