Human Rights and Equity Officer
POSITION: Human Rights and Equity Officer (non-union)
LOCATION: Mount St. Joseph Catholic Education Centre, Sault Ste. Marie, ON (travel throughout the board jurisdiction may be required)
EFFECTIVE DATE: Immediately
SALARY: $96,746 – $108,826
Reporting to the Director of Education, the incumbent will lead transformational change to expand cultures of respect for human rights and equity and champion the identification and elimination of systemic barriers. The Human Rights and Equity Officer will lead the implementation of Ontario’s Education Equity Action Plan in support of student achievement and well-being, while continuing to build a culture of respect for the principles of human rights and equity throughout HSCDSB. In collaboration with the Director of Education and the senior team, the Human Rights and Equity Officer will influence stakeholders to identify and address systemically based human rights and equity issues. The Human Rights and Equity Officer is responsible for the following:
- Establish and maintain networks of support for human rights and equity across the Board and within school communities
- Work with system leaders within the Board to develop policies and a comprehensive human rights and equity strategy focused on the promotion of human rights and equity and the elimination of systematic barriers
- Collaborate with a variety of board staff and stakeholders to lead and implement equity and inclusion strategies
- Lead human rights and equity compliance training programs for staff
- Collaborate with schools to provide equity and inclusion support to students, parents and staff
- Collaborate with Human Resources staff to provide recruitment, workplace harassment, and violence prevention training and information for stakeholders
- Collaborate with community partners including Ministry of Education staff
- Facilitate a wide variety of activities to build a culture of respect for human rights and equity within the community
- Collaborate with staff, unions, and stakeholders to promote employment equity
- Strengthen the implementation of culturally responsive and relevant pedagogy in classrooms
- Enhance data gathering, analysis and program planning to identify and address systemic organizational and attitudinal barriers
- Collaborate with senior officials to identify and respond to human rights and equity related risks
- Develop resources to support human rights and equity throughout the Board
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:
- Post-secondary degree in a Human Rights/Equity related discipline, Humanities or Social Sciences; or approved equivalent as determined by the Board
- A minimum of 5 years experience in a human rights or related role
- Demonstrated expertise in the application of human rights law
- Superior understanding of Ontario Human Rights case law; the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act as it relates to the Workplace Harassment, the Education Act and regulations; and associated legislation, regulations and policies related to human rights and equity
- Knowledge of Ontario’s publicly funded Catholic School system and education employment equity issues
- Knowledge of the teachings of the Catholic Church would be considered an asset
- Excellent skills and experience in interpersonal, communications and problem-solving skills
- Strong data analysis skills, sound judgment and sensitivity, broad understanding and an inclusive approach to building consensus, solving problems and relationship building
- Demonstrated ability to build rapport with various stakeholders, motivate people, diffuse escalating situations and put people at ease
- Experience handling contentious issues with sensitivity, confidentiality and discretion
- Superior time management and organizational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and the demonstrated ability to deal effectively with internal and external stakeholders
- Strong cultural awareness and demonstrated commitment to working within diverse school communities and work environments
