POSITION: Part-Time Secondary School Library Assistant (Temporary, Non-Union)

LOCATION: St. Mary’s College

EFFECTIVE DATE: Start ASAP, end date undetermined

This is a temporary part-time position.  The board is seeking a dynamic individual to assist in the efficient daily operations of Library services at SMC.  The successful candidate will be scheduled 9 am to 2:30 pm Monday through Friday, and may provide any of the following services:

  • Assist in maintenance of school library resource collections as directed by the Library Supervisor, which includes cataloguing materials; providing circulation services and conducting inventories of the collection
  • Provide support to the Library Supervisor on projects to bring innovative information services and products that support the evolving needs of the school library
  • Assist with the acquisition and evaluation of existing resources, including the weeding of materials as directed
  • Provide library services and supervision as required for students
  • Management of overdue materials using library software and liaising with teaching staff and administration to facilitate the return of library materials
  • Provide information services and basic technical support, including library and research skills instruction while maintaining routines and rules in the library as directed
  • Assist with the inventory maintenance and management of audio-visual equipment and school assigned technical resources (i.e. laptops)
  • Together with the Library Supervisor, provide software support and other assistance to HSCDSB elementary school library staff as needed
  • Undertake special projects and other duties as assigned

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications, skills, experiences, and attributes:

  • Librarian Technician/Library and Information Studies diploma or related post-secondary education
  • 1-2 years professional experience in a library setting
  • Experience working with databases
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Gmail, Slides)
  • Familiarity with computer hardware and audio visual equipment, including the ability to conduct preventive maintenance and troubleshoot issues
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working with and providing service to students and patrons
  • Ability to work effectively independently as well as within a team environment
  • Ability to submit a satisfactory Level 3 Vulnerable Sector Police Records Check prior to the commencement of employment duties
