LOCATION:  Special Education (community may vary, but regular travel throughout the Board’s jurisdiction will be required)

START DATE:  September 2024

The Board is seeking a dynamic, collaborative, creative, organized, and professional Catholic educator/leader who can work effectively with the staffs, students, parents, and communities in the Board’s jurisdiction. Reporting to the Superintendent of Special Education and working in consultation with the Special Education Coordinator, the Teacher of the Visually Impaired and Assistive Technology will provide support across the Board’s jurisdiction to students who are blind and visually impaired. As well, the position will provide additional support with the implementation of assistive technology in schools. The Teacher of the Visually Impaired and Assistive Technology will train students and staff on the use of assistive technology, directly support students with assistive technology needs, and assist with managing the Special Education Equipment Amount (SEA) inventory. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Providing leadership in fostering equity and inclusiveness in the development and implementation of programs and services for students with a visual impairment;
  • Assisting and support classroom teachers in accommodating their programs/instructional materials for students who are visually impaired;
  • Assessing and teaching students to utilize and further develop their sensory efficiency skills;
  • Providing information/goals to schools to develop IEPs for students with a visual impairment and assisting in writing corresponding Blind/Low Vision Alternative Report Cards;
  • Teaching students how to use assistive technology as it pertains to their visual impairment;
  • Developing and implementing an individualized program for students with a visual impairment;
  • Selecting from and implementing strategies and resources that include: Unified English Braille, tactile diagram reading, abacus skills, assistive technology skills, and independent living skills;
  • Producing and obtaining curriculum materials in uncontracted and/or contracted braille, as required;
  • Working in partnership with the classroom teacher to enhance the development of the student’s independence, communication skills and understanding of a school environment and its expectations

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Qualifications in Primary, Junior, and Intermediate Divisions
  • Special Education, Part 1
  • Teaching Students who are Blind, Part 1
  • Religious Education, Part 1
  • A strong belief in inclusion and working within a team capacity at the system level
  • Experience and comfort with assistive technology
  • Ability to facilitate professional learning sessions effectively, both in person and virtually
  • Comfort with a wide variety of technologies (e.g. Google Classroom, LMS, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams)
  • A valid driver’s license with a willingness and ability to travel frequently

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Special Education, Specialist
  • Certification in Unified English Braille (UEB) code (contracted and uncontracted)
  • Computers in the Classroom, Part 1/Integration of Information and Computer Technology in Instruction, Part 1
  • Religious Education, Specialist

This position is currently open to all OCT-certified applicants and will be considered in this order:  i) permanent teachers currently employed by the board; ii) occasional teachers currently employed by the board; iii) external OCT-certified teachers.
