The Board extends its deepest condolences and prayers to the family of Regis O’Connor, who passed into God’s loving arms on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024.

Regis’ contributions to Catholic Education were not just significant, they were transformative. His exceptional, faith-driven service left an indelible mark on all who encountered him. He dedicated many years of his life to Catholic Education, leaving a profound and inspiring impact on the community.

Regis played significant roles in the Catholic Education system. Before the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB) was formed, he served the Roman Catholic Separate School Board of Sault Ste. Marie in various capacities, including Chair, Vice-Chair, and Trustee.

After the formation of HSCDSB in 1998, Regis was the founding Chair and served as its Chair for six years. He then served for another six years as a Trustee until 2010. He was also the President of the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association between 1998 and 2000 and Vice-President of the Ontario Separate School Trustees’ Association.

Along with his long-lasting stance in Catholic Education, Regis was the visionary behind the book “Guardians at The Gates of Wonder – A History of the Huron-Superior Catholic District School and Its Predecessor Separate School Boards,” authored by Robert T. Dixon. This book, a testament to his dedication and knowledge, has become a valuable resource for understanding the history of our Board.
