Board Mourns Former Educator
The Board extends its deepest condolences and prayers to the family of Maria Burgess, who passed into God’s loving arms on Monday, July 8, 2024.
Maria, a dedicated educator for over 39 years, was known for her huge heart and her willingness to do anything for her students. Her impact on our school community was profound, her energy lighting up every room.
Maria began her career in 1975 as an elementary school teacher, then transitioned to St. Mary’s College (SMC) in 1976 as a language teacher. SMC was more than a school to her, it was another home and family.
Her presence at SMC for 37 years, until her retirement in June 2013, was a guiding light for all. In 2014, she returned and served as a supply teacher; despite retiring, she still had so much wisdom and knowledge she wanted to pass on to her students.
At SMC, teaching and being with her students was only one of her passions. The other passion was being a performer and being involved with Theatre SMC and the community theatre. She spent countless hours volunteering, directing, and producing many shows in the community. Her performances always left a lasting impression, and her dedication to the arts was truly inspiring.
“I was one of the fortunate people who had the privilege of working with Maria at St. Mary’s College. I recall how kind and welcoming she was to me when I moved from Elliot Lake to Sault Ste. Marie. She will be deeply missed by students and colleagues,” said Director of Education, Fil Lettieri.
