Board Mourns
The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Cecile Somme, who entered God’s loving embrace on June 17, 2025. Her loss is felt profoundly throughout our community, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched.
Cecile was a cherished and respected member of our board community. In 1998, she broke new ground as the first-ever female Director of Education for the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board. She led with courage and integrity until 2005, guiding the board through times of change with a steady hand, a clear vision, and a deep-rooted sense of purpose. As a leader, she exemplified strength in the face of challenge, always making decisions grounded in care and conviction.
More than an administrator, Cecile was a deeply compassionate educator who devoted her life to the pursuit of learning and the empowerment of others. Her commitment to students and to Catholic education remained steadfast, even after retirement. She continued to share her knowledge and passion through teaching roles at several universities, where she inspired and mentored countless students. Later, she extended her impact further by serving as a consultant for several First Nations communities, working to strengthen and uplift education in partnership with Indigenous leaders.
Cecile’s legacy is one of courage, compassion, and service. She not only shattered barriers but also opened doors for those who followed. Her leadership, wisdom, and kindness touched the lives of many, and her influence will be felt for generations to come.
“Cecile was more than a leader — she was a mentor and a deeply compassionate educator,” said Sandra Turco, HSCDSB Chair. “I had the privilege of working alongside her and witnessing firsthand the strength and unwavering commitment she brought to every decision. She broke barriers not for recognition, but to make space for others to thrive. Her impact on our board and on Catholic education will never be forgotten.”
May the eternal light of Christ shine upon Cecile, and may her soul rest in peace.
