HSCDSB Marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Sault Ste. Marie, ON (Sept. 30, 2025) – The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board is committed to honouring the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and recognizing the history and legacy of residential schools. Across the Board, students and staff are engaging in meaningful learning opportunities that focus on reconciliation, the impact of residential schools, and the importance of Orange Shirt Day and the Every Child Matters campaign.
“Our Board is committed to ensuring that students not only learn about the intergenerational impacts of residential schools, but also deepen their understanding of reconciliation and its significance in our communities,” said Fil Lettieri, Director of Education. “Through events, classroom activities, and Indigenous-focused learning opportunities, we continue to honour this day and the ongoing journey of reconciliation.”
“Every year, our Board takes meaningful steps toward Truth and Reconciliation,” said Sandra Turco, Chairperson of HSCDSB. “Guided by our Catholic values of compassion, respect, and justice, we are committed to creating opportunities for students and staff to learn about First Nation, Métis and Inuit histories, cultures, and perspectives. Honouring this day reminds us of our shared responsibility to acknowledge the past, seek healing, and walk together in faith toward a more inclusive and caring future.”
The HSCDSB is committed to teaching students through First Nation, Métis and Inuit ways of learning and continues to collaborate closely with local Indigenous community partners to develop programs and provide services that enhance student achievement, increase graduation rates, and promote overall student well-being. As we continue our work toward Truth and Reconciliation, we strive to provide every student with meaningful opportunities to learn about First Nation, Métis and Inuit histories, cultures, and perspectives.
The HSCDSB acknowledges its role in helping to build awareness, foster understanding, and create space for dialogue about the truths of the past, while working together toward healing and a more inclusive future. You can find out more about Indigenous Education at HSCDSB here.
