Sault Ste. Marie, ON (Sept. 23, 2024)  – Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB) is committed to supporting Indigenous children, youth and families in the communities we serve. We strive to learn more about our shared history and acknowledge the injustices faced by Indigenous people and their communities.

As part of this commitment, we recognize Truth and Reconciliation Week (September 23 – 27). At each of our schools across the Board, students will have an opportunity to learn about what reconciliation means and the history of residential schools and deepen their understanding of Orange Shirt Day and the Every Child Matters Campaign.

“Our Board is committed to ensuring students learn about the intergenerational impact of residential schools,” said Fil Lettieri, Director of Education. “With Truth and Reconciliation initiatives across our Board, students and staff will engage in insightful learning opportunities. During this important week for Truth and Reconciliation, we will honour its significance while remaining dedicated to Indigenous-focused experiential and land-based learning and infusing Indigenous perspectives into the curriculum year-round.”

During Truth and Reconciliation Week, the Board will also observe Faith Day, on Friday, Sept. 27, which will include meaningful activities such as a Community Gathering in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Keynote speaker Cadmus Delorme will address the theme “Truth and Reconciliation: What We Inherited and Building a Long-Term Relationship,” offering insight into how we can move forward together. The day will also feature immersive Indigenous experiences, with local Elders and knowledge keepers present to share their wisdom and teachings. On this day, all attendees are encouraged to wear orange.

The HSCDSB acknowledges its role in sharing the dark history of residential schools through building awareness and understanding in all our school communities.

“Every year, our Board does more in the journey towards Truth and Reconciliation,” said Gary Trembinski, Chairperson of HSCDSB. “Each school has activities planned, and it’s great to see students, staff, and administration recognizing this important week. We continue to provide resources and opportunities to advance our commitment. I’m especially looking forward to hearing our keynote speaker, Cadmus Delorme, at our Faith Day celebration.”
