POSITION: Superintendent of Education

(TEMPORARY POSITION BASED ON ONE-YEAR FUNDING FROM THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION)

The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board operates 19 schools in the communities of Blind River, Chapleau, Elliot Lake, Espanola, Hornepayne, Massey, Sault Ste. Marie, Wawa, and White River.

The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board invites applications for the position of Superintendent of Education.  School boards have been provided one-year funding to hire a Board Math Lead, Superintendent of Education.  As outlined in the Priorities and Partnership Funding Memorandum, the successful candidate will inform, monitor and provide timely reporting of progress towards math achievement and improvement targets and lead board-wide actions to meet these targets.  This position will also be responsible for:  attending ministry learning and networking sessions; ensuring fidelity to the Ontario curriculum; and supporting the consistent and intentional implementation of high-impact instructional practices.  Board Math Leads will also develop parent math resources and facilitate job-embedded educator professional learning opportunities in math.  The successful candidate may also be assigned additional duties as determined by the Director of Education.  The assignment is temporary, based on special funding from the Ministry of Education.    

The successful candidate will be expected to assume the position no later than Monday, July 31, 2023 and work from the Mount St. Joseph Catholic Education Centre in Sault Ste. Marie. In addition, frequent travel throughout the board’s jurisdiction may be required.

Reporting to the Director of Education, the Superintendent of Education will provide effective leadership and work proactively with the board’s senior management in executing the Board’s Multi-Year Strategic Plan to ensure consistent quality standards throughout the board. 

Candidates are required to be currently enrolled in or having completed the Supervisory Officer Qualification Program.

Candidates are to be actively practicing Catholics with a strong history of dedication to the goals and objectives of Catholic education. The ideal candidate is an energetic, self-motivated, collaborative, hard-working, and visionary team leader who is ethical and caring and exhibit:

  • Proven leadership skills, particularly in instructional coaching, building educator and administrator capacity in mathematics teaching, and designing and monitoring school and board learning;
  • A positive attitude and a track record of forming and sustaining strong community partnerships;
  • Competency with technology and ability to handle competing demands in an efficient manner;
  • Knowledge of, commitment to, and experience with Indigenous education and communities;
  • The ability to work with principals, teachers, and support staff in an environment of trust.

In accordance with the Ontario Leadership Framework (2013), the ideal candidate will demonstrate the personal leadership resources of an effective leader, core leadership practices / competencies, and system practices and procedures.

The Superintendent of Education will provide effective leadership to, and work proactively with, school administrators. The Superintendent of Education will provide strategic, innovative and operational leadership and will work with the board’s senior management in developing and executing strategic plans in support of the educational and business objectives of the board.  The successful candidate is expected to provide support at board meetings and other venues.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Currently enrolled in or completion of the Supervisory Officer Qualification Program
  • Experience as a school principal
  • Three of the following four qualifications: Primary, Junior, Intermediate, or Senior Qualifications
  • Religious Education in Catholic Schools, Part 1

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Qualifications in all four divisions
  • Additional qualifications in Math
  • Special Education, Part 1
  • Religious Education in Catholic Schools, Specialist
  • French as a Second Language, Part 1
