What is the student achievement plan

In 2023, The Ministry of Education released a Student Achievement Plan Framework. The Framework sets out goals and performance indicators for school boards to monitor student achievement, develop action plans, and measure their progress.

The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board Student Achievement Plan has been developed to include the three mandatory provincial priorities and goals: Achievement of Learning Outcomes in Core Academic Skills, Preparation of Students for Future Success, and Student Engagement and Well-Being.

Our Student Achievement Plan is a working document that will be continually revised based on student achievement outcomes and consultation with stakeholders. This input is important to ensure this plan captures the needs of our community, while still meeting the legislative requirements of the Better Schools and Students Outcomes Act (2023).

The plan is posted in April and will be updated annually.

The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) provided data from the previous school year. For this plan, data is representative of the 2023-24 school year. School Boards also review their own board data in each of the categories to develop action plans to support improved student achievement.

Priority: Achievement of Learning Outcomes in Core Academic Skills

Goal: Improve students’ literacy learning and achievement

  • Implement the Early Reading Screener for Year 2 Kindergarten to Grade 2.
  • Increase the number of Reading Intervention Teachers to support Early Reading Screening and provide tiered reading interventions using explicit, evidence-based instruction focused on foundational reading skills.
  • Strengthen educator capacity in literacy and mathematics instruction, assessment, and curriculum implementation.
  • Prioritize literacy and mathematics during system-wide professional development, emphasizing implementation of evidence-based research practices and high-impact instructional strategies.
  • Establishing math goals in every school and supporting schools with Math Facilitators and Tutors through small group interventions.
  • Expand use of digital tools to support student learning.
  • Provide EQAO preparation in schools for provincial assessments.

Priority: Preparation of Students for Future Success

Goal: Improve students’ graduation rates and preparedness for future success

  • Promote and support diverse pathways for secondary students, including OYAP, OYAP FAST, Dual Credits, SHSM, and Co-Op, allowing students to be exposed to many pathways to better preprare themselves for future careers opportunities.
  • Expand Experiential Learning opportunities to students from K-12 and strengthen community partnerships to provide more opportunities that lead to post-secondary pathways and employment opportunities.
  • Review data through Student Success meetings each term in secondary to help support credit accumulation by developing intervention strategies prior to the end of a course.
  • Prepare and support students with special education needs for a smooth transition to their area of interest as they move from high school to opportunities such as post-secondary education, the workforce, or community involvement.

Priority: Student Engagement & Well-Being

Goal: Improve students’ participation in class time and learning

  • Dedicate a human resource from the Mental Health team to focus on student attendance and re-engagement. This would include initiating an Attendance and Re-engagement Committee and leading an Attendance Campaign.
  • Ensure Mental Health Boards are in place in all schools and consistent in promoting mental health services and supports.
  • School board mental health services will be shared with all families via school communication methods, the Board’s social media platforms, and website.
