Your First Day

When does school start?

Morning classes begin at 8:30 am with a ten minute warning bell at 8:20 am.

Grade 9 students will receive their class schedule then spend the rest of the day getting to know new people and completing fun activities with the Link Crew leaders.

Full classes will begin on day 2.

How do I get to school?

Visit the school transportation website to see if you qualify for transportation on the school bus.

Students can also walk or get a ride from older students or their parents/friends. You may want to plan ahead if walking or driving to ensure you arrive at school on time for the first bell.

What do I wear?

The first day is a dress casual day because you will be involved in orientation activities with the Link Crew. You will wear your school uniform with pride on the second day and beyond with the exception of certain spirit wear or dress down days.

The uniform items can be purchased through the uniform store.

Where do I go?

There will be many people around the school that will help you get to your first class. Your name will be posted on signs throughout the school with the location of your homeroom (first class).

You will receive your schedule in homeroom and your teacher and/or Link Crew leader will assist with reading your schedule.

Check out the school map to familiarize yourself with SMC.

Where do I put my stuff?

You will be assigned a locker in homeroom.  The cost of the locker is included in a student fee.  Only locks provided by the school can be used on student lockers.

Check out this site to practice opening a locker.

What should I bring?

Your teachers will inform you of the necessary school supplies that will be required for the year.  Arriving to class with a binder filled with lined paper and a writing instrument (pen/pencil) makes for a successful start to the school year.

Students bring a healthy lunch to school or purchase food in the school cafeteria.  Leaving the school at lunch is not advisable because restaurants get quite busy which may not leave you enough time to get back to school on time.

Where do I go for help?

St. Mary’s College is well equipped with many student supports. Visit the Main Office, Student Services, the Indigenous Grad Coach, or the Chaplain for help. Teachers and Link Crew leaders can also point you in the right direction for support.

The “Your Resources” page on this website contains a comprehensive listing of supports at SMC.

What if I am late?

Let’s hope that isn’t the case on day one!

Students who are late or were absent need to receive an excuse slip from the main office.  It is advisable to have your guardian call ahead or send you with a note explaining the reason you were late or absent.  Being on time and attending school regularly ensures student success!

The main office phone number is 705-945-5540.

What school activities can I join?

One of the best ways to get the most out of high school is to join a team, club, or school group.

Fall sports such as football, girls’ basketball, and cross country begin during the last week of August so be sure to follow us on social media or find these important dates through local media outlets.

All of the other extracurricular activities will be promoted throughout the school year.
